Composting 101

As I mentioned in my previous post, the no impact year had huge reverberations in my life, causing me to reconsider everything.  Another change that I made, that I would not have done otherwise, is that I started composting our food waste.  I live in Brooklyn, NY and I do have some outdoor space, so this makes it more feasible for me than for someone with no outdoor nuthin.  That said, I was apprehensive about it – would it smell? Would it bring a lot of fruit flies into our kitchen?  Would I actually do it?  How do I do it? What do I need?

Being in NYC, I had concern about attracting vermin so decided to go with something called a compost tumbler.  The tumbler is completely closed and elevates the waste off the ground.  At first we used an old yogurt container or Tupperware to collect our kitchen scraps, but that got smelly and was always too small, so we purchased a stainless steel container that sits in our kitchen. No Impact Post Production-Part 2

The emblem for me of my second editing period on the film is this: the stairs.  Extreme, Quixotic, perhaps – take the stairs instead of the elevator.  But hey, you’ve got to “dream the impossible,” right? and it’s just that, the very extremity of that dream which started to wake me up.

Somewhere during that time I started wanting to connect with Colin and Michelle – they were still in the middle of their great experiment – so I sent an email.  “Sunday I went shopping,” I told them.  “Bed Bath and Beyond (EEK!) and a colossal record store here called “Amoeba.”  Hypnosis, writ large!  Things, things things.  And in both stores I was aware for the first time that the shallow breathing and increased heart rate is not a coincidence, it’s The Trance!  A trap!  Cunningly set by the thing-sellers!” Read the rest of this entry »
